Recovering chemicals in Moldova
From 2011 to 2013, REMONDIS Industrie Service worked on a project to recover a total of 107 tonnes of chemicals from around 1,000 secondary schools in and around Moldova's capital, Chișinău. The recovered chemicals were packed in 30-litre drums with lock rings or in special boxes and then transported away by truck. The chemicals were being sent to the hazardous waste incineration plant, REMONDIS SAVA, in Brunsbüttel, a fully owned subsidiary of REMONDIS Industrie Service.
Moldova is a land-locked country in south-east Europe. It has a border with Romania in the west and is surrounded by the Ukraine to the north, east and south. The country has just under 4 million inhabitants who are becoming increasingly aware of the need to protect their environment
REMONDIS SAVA project manager on site
There was a REMONDIS SAVA project manager on site at all times. REMONDIS SAVA hired four Moldovan nationals to support him, including two female employees trained in chemicals and two drivers. Three small trucks were acquired specifically for this project to collect and transport the materials.

From Chisinau to the surrounding areas
The first stage of the project was to collect the chemicals from the capital city. Each day, the team travelled to one school where the hazardous waste was inspected, listed, sorted and packed. One secondary school in each district acted as a central waste collection point for all the neighbouring schools. The volumes collected from the schools differed greatly: from between 1 and 5 kilograms to, in some cases, between 2 and 4 tonnes.
